The farmer wants a wife

You bet . Most of us on the farm wait too long to find one. So , it's not easy to find a woman for this unique and tough  job .The farmers wife has to be someone very, very special. I was 42 before I introduced wonderwoman  from the big smoke to a world even she could not always cope with.
You see,  for starters there was always something EXTRA to add to the days work ;  It's as true today,  as it was over 15 years ago .  We are not like the city folks who get all worried when something a bit different from yesterday  happens - a mere flood or a drought comes along - The greens think they are telling us all about nature , but we have to work with it every day or we are just "outa here"  .
Didn't those kids listen when Banjo was being read at school .We love the country -do the Greens love it better from a distance ?
After 15years  she's still a wonder and still a wondering - more work than any family has ever put up with ever - its wonder she puts up with it because some days , quite frankly,  I can understand if she feels just like a slave .You nearly have to grow up here,  to really understand .
Coming from the city,  she could never quite work out why I couldn't tell her when I would be home again - I  mean "it wasn't as if I went far away" . And to her,  it seemed like something out there somewhere was, well, more important than her , and turning up for tea on time . Amazingly, she soon learned to cope with the individual needs of all the new offspring , the constant cleaning and feeding and then to top it off , go back home to deal with the poor neglected ones with clothes on  .
The big problem came when,  after adapting to all the extra work I expected her to do as routine,  I would then expect her to cope with double the trouble on days we should have had off . It's enough stress to make you both of you think of trading each other in - let alone that dash farm.
Luckily we don't live on how we feel sometimes out here . Love is never easy.. is it?  (We've been watching- "As Time goes by" ( series 3 Episode 2) and "The Cosby Show" Season 3 last episode disk2  Brilliant stuff on that subject !Why do we do it instead of selling up and making a killing? We do it because its family and family is the biggest and the most precious enterprise in the country .

You forget as part of a farming family that you nearly have to born here to survive the stress here . For those who come from the city,  its always much harder for them - they have so little time to get used to the idea that something close to slavery still exists  .
-Who else expects their whole family to work for nothing and like it .
-Who else expects their wife to do the impossible every day and even more on those every other days.
-Who else expects their dearly loved partners to deal with a myriad of demands that she doesn't even know about when the day begins .
-Who else expects the joy of sharing to be marred by years without adequate rain or income .
-Who else expects to work for nothing and like it.
Only very very very very very special women can can handle being a farmers wife  .
(You don't think what I am saying is true in Australia today - well get in touch with one,  please . )
Now looking back on 15 years of hard work with a wonderful woman , I realise we men have these incredible expectations of them .
If only people from the city would really listen to us and pay us a decent wage for our work ( only a few cents more and we would make money instead of eating  into our families capital resources ) It's not about how big you are,  or how smart you are . Our bottom line isn't hard to reach in economic terms - just need to stop beliveing that all good comes to those who work hard  ( cause you ain't seen nothing yet!)
Please do not patronise us (Classic is "  we need better technology" sorry not us my friend)  - or try to solve our problems for us ( we don't need lectures on conservation from the silly shallow political football games on environment . Why should we accept it when the city projects its guilt over how it uses the environment  onto us ? ) Learn to re respect us  and listen to us - give us our basic needs to keep us from going mad . Get close to us and know how we operate ,  before you criticize what we do.
Uno,  we as families may choose to be slaves sometimes, but we don't appreciative being always treated like slaves.
Who else in the whole wide world (Nobody!)  is expected to run some of the biggest and most efficient high tech family enterprises  in the country ( see the list here ) and  still be told that they are not progressive because they can't make a buck ( only Australia and New Zealand) . Should we all give in and conform to the confining brilliant economic simplicities  of our city accountants and dumbing down schools of mere description  ?
No need to because , as efficient and not "extract at all cost"  producers  we offer the country a  model of survival and resilience of place ( ecosystem ) people and product under great pressure . All we ask for the future is that the many outsiders really listen to us and respect our uniquely different , less demanding and less quick fix approach to ecosystem and economic management .So what if we are slow - a least  we produce the goods - thats more than you can say about some  Go the independents

Helping your mates out

Not as though it doesn't happen in the city,  but its gotta happen out here sometimes to save us from going mad .  I nearly went mad the other month trying to milk 250cows for someone who needed a break for the day .   The story is here .

I love ducks, don't you ?

They are so innocent .

Like kids, pity they don't stay that way .
Notice there is a bit of duck shoving going on and the lineup is getting a big ragged at the back .Some one' striying to pass , scamble up the ladder , jump the queue , so what's new  eh ?. The good thing is that following mother duck is good .Following some duck who doesn't know where they going is not using the brains your mother and father gave you . Don't be just a dumb duck -More on duckshoving here

" We're listening mum " they are saying . Yeah sure, yeah sure you are . They may look like they are listening and following your lead but that untidy que at the back .
Reminds me of that truly great saying about the truth of love and hate "I love my kids, it's what they do I can't stand. Its what they DO I hate " .
Go on get a bit angry if you have been playing dumbducks as a mature person.  Then you might decide to leave the adult dumb ducks brigade that keeps so many following ,but not leading  .( The theme of "The Good Life";s Tim and Barbara HERE  )
Do you ever wish your children would keep following you in a line like this this all their lives .Its nice when it happens,   but get wise again .
I once suggested to my dear wife that I would prefer it if , rather than interrupting me, she just kept saying " yes dear " to what I was saying . She did what I asked - wonder in itself . Unfortunately it drove me mad after about half an hour . Ever since I am a bit suspicious when she uses those 2 words - oh the delights of our own limitations - getting what you want is not everything .

What I hate though is when mature people use animal like excuses . Dumb ducks .Old dogs
"I'm just a stupid animal ''. Its an excuse from the cringe merchants songbook.
I mean some silly big talkers presume its clever - NOW we are all allowed to blame natural causes. One bloke told me the psych's call it pseudoinnocence  . That sounds right to me (Its something kids would do )
Its the sort of cop out to beat all cop outs -----this idea that our genes decide everything .

If my dog heard you say "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" he  would be off  like a shot .He expects more of you thatn that . Look at those eyes and the tail . Give me a rest " this blokes a woose".  I mean a dog  looks to ya for leadership   Lead mate, or be lost .As forTricks ? maybe you are right  We old  ones need em less as we get older- we'd rather get on with doing what we are good at . We have our tricks - don't you worry- finely honed and not every waking moment!
As for playing ducks in line ?-fine for kids  but  maybe ya haven't grown up yet ?
Apparently some aussie badged up the disease of duck shovin by the 1870s - Good on ya mate for telling it as it is ! That bloke who observed human beings playing games  was no woose!

Love that series "Yes Minister"

After seeing Hacker befuddled by the bureaubrats ,I never thought I'd see the day when a leader, particularly one who has none to deal with, defend them. I've lived to see Bob Brown do it on Jon Feine's program, a few days ago.

Some city folks tell me I lead a sheltered life out ere , No politickan and such: but we see a lot . We have to study all our lives to survive . And we can see a dud talking his way into trouble!

Which got me wondering why these blokes from the big smoke keep sucking the same sauce bottle on trees , if ya get what I mean. Tony Abbott this week offered us the same old same old story; just trees . I mean its like a broken record now on slow forward from 20 billion to 20 million - (I'm with Barnaby on this; who cares billions or trillions- It's still a heck of a lotta waste)
Don't they know that we JUST want someone to talk sense about our place!!!!!).Got it ! Not that we don't love native trees (20% of my property )> What's driving us insane is these simple blokes keep trotting out the same old stuff about ONE part of the story .Take their misplaced NEW FAITH in soil sequestration stuff-- looky ere
Trees Don't they know this tree bit is cheap for them, but expensive for us .
Why do we always have to pay ? Are we the bad guys ?/ One 10 metre tall tree takes away 100 square metres of land once used for Agriculture ( don't believe me Click here )Thats $1 from them and $100 from us (10000/100) And that's capital value - more like losing $1000 straight up cause we might have made $100 out of that land each year. Dummies they are .

The other stupid thing they have been hammering on for years is sending some poor politically correct but untrained person out to try and convince us to move our fences in on the boundaries . Until last year in Victoria, we country folks weren't even allowed to trim overhanging branches ( or OR at least , we thought we couldn't ) 5 metres of overhanging branches around a hectare equals a loss of nearly 20% of the permanent value of that hectare for most agriculture in our dry country.
I may not be able to do much complex maths, but if I couldn't add up - I would not be on the land for more than one season ( don't you just love The Good Life )first series as they cope with poverty and peasantry and they get "their first harvest !!!!
Why don't they do what we do - leave great chunks; the possums don't dominate and other systems get a go. Instead of paying people to meddle over a few branches and messing around on the boundaries ,buy some paddocks . Did ya get that!!!!! We are interested in effective conservation,, not simple stories !

Ditch the paperwork and just have a bounty on some sorts of chainsaw use and unsustainable vegetation removal( not forest regen works for example )
Bit simple for them you think ? It would work . Have to work better than 2 decades of bureau meddling .How many hectares of genuinely new biodiversity has all this messing around on the edges actually produced ? We are waiting for an answer !

If only our leaders would ask someone who knows what they are talking about on the environment. If they believe we can't be entirely objective ( which I may be inclined to consider, cause my wife told me it might occassionally be true ) why don't they ask someone who does know

Infact why don't they just give graduates a decent job and train them ; Ditch all these "just talk trees people" ( they keep leaving anyway ) from our Councils and so called " Authorities" and get just one person in each Council in Australia who can talk some common sense about the whole environment( not just one bit of it )

I did laugh when I heard Bob Brown clearly trying to defend the growth bureau on Jon Feines program a few days ago.

Some radicals can no longer survive just preaching "the truth " on the streets; they have to get taxpayers to fund them; we fund them to listen to them . Surely the last refuge of a scoundrel is to defend the indefensible - uneccesarily ignorant and overly bureaucratic bullsh . Great evil is done and will continue to be done in the name of the misplaced concreteness in statutory words . Deal with it Tony Abbott ; Take the high ground beyond the trees.
